Why join the Duke Conversations Society?

Interested in joining the society? A questionnaire can be downloaded by clicking here.

The Society is an inclusive, informal, intellectual group of students at Duke, committed to the tenets of education set forth by Duke's President Richard H. Brodhead. We seek spirited discussion, and have conversations with many people - famous people, yes, but also those who can provoke, engage, and defend their views.

But what does it mean to become a member of the DCS? Will you become the ardent disciple of some obscure cause? It happens. Will your life ever be the same? Definitely not. Society members bubble with questions—questions ranging from the scientific to the political to the personal. And these questions are not fixed. In a single night everything you believe may be deconstructed, reinterpreted, or even thrown out altogether.

Society members are bold. They try on new suits, explore new possibilities, make mistakes and then learn from them—they do not stand idly by. They are not afraid to stake a firm claim in the quest to find what they believe. They are not beaten down by relativism, made timid by criticism, or rendered senseless by prevailing opinion. They think for themselves.

The beauty of the Duke Conversations Society is that it holds the answers you are seeking. Not only will the Conversations Society accommodate any passion or interest, it will present you a thousand more. The only unpardonable question is the one not pursued. There are no limits and there is no out of bounds. This great privilege does not come without cost however: no one will hold your hand. It is up to you to exploit the potential within, and only after that potential is realized will Conversations have meaning. Otherwise, it is just another dinner.

Because of this, openness to change is prerequisite. Old notions must be set aside, new ones must be explored. If the original idea is reinstated later, so be it; the road has been traveled, and you will never be the same again.

So join the society. Try something new. Maybe you'll find what you're looking for.
