The Numbers

According to federal census data for North Carolina, the state ranks 6th in the number of children under age 5 years old (27.5% of children statewide, 30% in Durham).

Nearly 25% of the state's children live in low-income households, with 19% at the poverty level.

Children growing up in low income communities are 7 times less likely to graduate from college than their peers in higher income communities.

The number of children living in single-parent households is on the rise, up from 25% in 1990 to 33% in 2000. In Durham, almost 31% of households are led by a single-parent.

North Carolina children living in households in which no parent has full-time, year round employment is staggering - 30% in 2000, up from 25% in 1990.

Durham public schools currently enroll over 2400 third-graders, with enrollment expected to increase to 2800 by 2009.

It is safe to estimate that at least 20% of the students in these public schools live at the poverty level, meaning nearly 500 students could lack internet access at home in this year?s 3rd grade class alone.
